More Hostels

Accommodations prices in Bucharest are dependably higher than anywhere else in Romania. All properties listed here include breakfast unless otherwise noted.

Central Bucharest

Str Academiei 19-21
Single with shared bath €14

Str. Matei Millo 16
Single €40
Double €50
Double with private bathroom €70
They've just renovated 40 rooms. Some are tiny and ill-lit. The ancient, two-door elevator will have you absentmindedly crossing yourself. The upshot is that breakfast is served in a Paris-style lobby lounge by a guy who missed his call as a game show host. All rooms have TV and sinks.

Hostel Miorita
Tel. +40 (0) 21 312 0361
Str Lipscani 12
Rooms €50
In the Historic Centre this six-room inn has plain, but pleasant rooms, TV and free WiFi. Air con available.

Hanul lui Manuc (Manuc’s Inn)
Tel. +40 (0) 21 313 1415
hmanuc at rnc dot ro
Str. Franceza 62-64
Singles €35
Doubles €56
Originally a 19th century merchants’ inn. Sculpted wooden balconies overlook the courtyard. Prime location, but the 22 rooms (wood-beam ceilings, brown carpets, TV, old bathroom tile) are a test of optimism.

Rembrandt Hotel
Str Smârdan 11
Singles €63
Doubles €91-113
A relatively new 15-room, Dutch-owned hotel. Faces the landmark National Bank in the Historic Centre. Rooms have polished wood floors, wall-size wooden headboards and DVD players. 'Business' rooms are decent, but the lone single and 'tourist' double are quite small. Air con and Internet available.

Salcamilor Street, No. 2

Hotel Capsa
Tel. +40 (0) 21 313 4038
Calea Victoriei 36
Singles €135 & 170
Doubles €200
A charming 1852 facade and its cake shop set this place apart. Rooms have high ceilings and dark-wood panelling. Fitness center, air con and internet available.

Near the Train Station
Those not wanting to submit to an immediate test of wills with the con-artist taxi drivers just after alighting from the 15 hour train from Budapest can walk from the station to these nearby choices.

Hotel Helios
Tel. +40 (0) 21 310 7083
Str Iulia Hasden 16
singles €66
doubles €77
This 15-room hotel faces an Orthodox church (and is thusly peaceful), with stylish rooms and floor-to-ceiling wardrobes. There are 20% discounts on Saturdays and Sundays. Air con and internet available.

Vila 11
Instant online booking

Tel. +40 (0) 722 495 900
Str Institutul Medico Miliitar 11
Dorms (usually incl breakfast) 10 euros
Singles €18
Doubles €28
Canadian run and homey, on a back street. Call ahead; sometimes no one's around.

Hotel Astoria
Tel. +40 (0) 21 318 9989
B-dul Dinica Golescu 27
singles €30
doubles €45
Run by the railroad, with all the class you might expect, but there's some intangible charm in its stone-tile entries and wood armoires.

Outside the Centre
In Bucharest, not being dead center is often more of a perk than you'd think; better rooms, cheaper prices, fewer ill-intentioned ne'er do wells loitering around.... If it's near decent public transportation, you have everything to gain by avoiding properties in the center.

Casa Alba
Tel. +40 (0) 21 230 4525
Alea Privighetorilor 1-3
bungalows €21.50
tent sites €6
Yes, camping's possible here. This place is just northeast of Baneasa airport in almost-suburban Bucharest (to get here, take Bus No 301 north from Piata Romana; get off a few stops past the airport and walk 500m east along Alea Privighetorilor). Additionally, bus No 783 to the main airport goes by here. No breakfast, but there's a restaurant on-site.

The Funky Chicken Hostel
Instant online booking
Tel. +40 (0) 21 312 1425
Str Gen Berthelot 63
dorm bed €8
This hostel occupies a historic home on a shady street, with three dorm rooms that fit 18. Yes, 18. Sweet dreams. There's a kitchen for guest use and, bizarrely, free cigarettes to smoke out in the courtyard (Welcome to Romania!!). No breakfast.

Butterfly Villa Hostel
Instant online booking
Tel. +40 (0) 747 032 644
Str Dumitru Zosima 82
dorms €9
singles €14
doubles €26
Widely regarded as Bucharest's best hostel, but the location kind of sucks. But look on the bright side; it's clean, there's a small courtyard and terrace, darts, video games, DVDs, free WiFi, and (gulp) free laundry! This place is the pinnacle of 'laid-backedness', personified by staff sworn to this very lifestyle. Order breakfast for lunch if you like. Bus No 282 goes here from the train station or take No 300 from Piata Romana.

Youth Hostel Villa Helga
Instant online booking
Tel. +40 (0) 21 610 2214
Str Salcâmilor 2
dorm €11
singles €16
doubles €28
In aconverted old villa east of the center. It has clean rooms, a new kitchen for guest use and patio seats under a vine canopy. Stay six days and get one night free. Internet available.

Vila Gabriela

+40 (0) 21 352 2053
Str Margaritarului 18, Vila A-104, Otopeni village
dorm with shared bathroom €12
singles with shared bathroom €18

triples €35
Your arrival is celebrated with a shot of tuica (Romanian's national moonshine). This place is run by English- and French-speaking retirees, with the occassional appearance by beautiful Miss Gabriela herself, who has the best English accent in Romania. It's 2km from the international airport, making it the best place to stage jetlag recovery upon arrival. The downside is that getting into the city on public transport from here is a royal pain. So much so that these sweet ladies haven't quite figured it out themselves. The rooms are homey and there's a garden outside. Staff can arrange transport to/from the airport. Internet, restaurants and banks are all nearby. Take Bus number 783 from the airport to "Primaria Otopeni" station. It's about a five minute walk from here.
