The Painted Monasteries

Suceava

Moldavia

In the middle of a quaint village Moldovita Monastery, the 'yellow monastery', consists of a fortified quadrangular enclosure with towers and brawny gates and the recently restored monastery at the center.

Moldovita also has fortifications and surrounding buildings, equally as alluring as the exterior frescoes. The well-tended grounds and charming stone buildings give this place a charged spiritual edge. On the church's southern exterior wall is a depiction of the defense of Constantinople in AD 626 against Persians dressed as Turks, while on the porch is a representation of the Last Judgment. Inside the sanctuary is a portrait of Prince Petru Rares, the monastery's founder, offering the church to Christ. All of these works date from 1537.
