News Relevant news stories, blog posts and informative links for Romania, Moldova and Transdniestr September 28th, 2007: Romania ranks 69th in corruption index. No news there. I think all that magically disappearing EU funding may have something to do with it. August 10th, 2007: Now I'm usually not one to spread fear, but this story gave me the heebiejeebies and I thought others should at least be aware of it: Fiumicino, sfiorata la tragedia Un volpino salva un aeroplano. If your Italian isn't up to scartch (don't worry, neither is mine, a friend summarized it for me), basically a Blue Air flight going from Rome to Bucharest narrowly escaped disaster. Someone, undoubtedly distracted by their smoke break or cell phone, forgot to close the luggage bay on the plane. As it was taxiing to take off, a dog escaped from its kennel, jumped out of the plane and started following it down the runway. The dog's owner saw this, yelled for them to stop the plane and saved the day. Everyone on the plane would have died when the air pressure changed at altitude. Good dog. June 3rd, 2007: The ferry-fueled border crossing from Zimnicea, Romania to Svistov, Bulgaria has reopened after a ten year interruption - Bulgaria and Romania Revive Water Transport Connection March 28th, 2007: God I love Romanian politics. I'd be funny if it weren't so damn infuriating - Governing coalition in Romania near collapse March 27th, 2007: Romania just took another step closer to being mainstream - First Starbucks' location: Plaza Romania Feb 28th, 2007: Need an EU grant? Call a Romanian witch Feb 17th, 2007: This won't be a great revelation to anyone who has ever driven in Romania: Romania leader in deadly road accidents For more of my personal commentary on the subject see my section on driving in Romania. Feb 2nd, 2007: Good ol' Basescu, his incessant faux pas could fill a book, a BIG book: Romania president tells Bill Gates piracy is great Jan 19th, 2007: Low-cost airline Wizz Air launches base in Romania Jan 9th, 2007: Why does this come as no surprise? Romania Lagging On Anti-corruption Reforms I have it on good authority that corruption in Romania won't dramatically improve "until all the old people die" who are currently in power. In other news, Romania wants "Dracula's castle" back and Low-cost air companies in Romania double passenger number, which lists all the current low-cost carries into Romania and other carriers (e.g. EasyJet) that are preparing to start routes of their own. Jan 7th, 2007: New year, new position in the world, same tourism shtick: Romania sinks its teeth into the tourist trade Jan 5th, 2007: How did they not see this coming? Der! Moldovans rush for Romanian visas What a pain in the ass for the poor Moldovans. Dec 30th, 2006: Here's a story highlighting the amazing virility and distribution of (often goofball) rumors in Romania: Romania sorting out EU myths Dec 22nd, 2006: The border between Moldova and Romania, where both nationalities used to wander through freely is about to become a very tough place for Moldovans heading to Rom for school, vacation, whatever... Romania Beefs Up Security at EU's Eastern Frontier Dec 13th, 2006: This was very unexpected, but good news (and means last minute, panic editing of the LP manuscript!!!) Moldova to resume direct railroad traffic to Russia. Dec 11th, 2006: The elections in Transdniestr had the
expected results - Igor
Smirnov Wins a Fourth Term in Office Dec 9th, 2006: This is so shameful, even Romania's priests are are demanding thinly-vieled bribes now... Wedding priest to fine non-virgins Dec 5th, 2006: I got Google alerts for both these stories
on the same day. Bad day for Rom: Romania
